Process to get Driving License in NewJersey H1B Holder From India

If you are a H1B holder from India and if you would like to get driving license in New Jersey follow the below steps:

Documents required (All Originals)

  1. Passport
  2. Social Security Card
  3. I-797
  4. I-94
  5. NJ Address Proof document (Like Bank statement, Phone Bill, Net Bill)
  6. Indian Driving License

If you have a Indian Car driving license (preferably chip smart card), in most cases, you will get NJ driving license with out road test.

Step-1: Choose the county in which you are residing. Click Here
Step-2: Suppose you choose Hudson county, then there are two dmv offices. one at Jersey City and another one at Bayonne.

Step-3:To get  driving license it is mandatory to pass written test (Knowledge test) and vision test.
Written test is conducted only on some of the DMV offices.
So check before you go to visit DMV office.
In Hudson county, only at Bayonne DMV office, you can take written test. Check Here

Step-4: How to clear the DMV written Test.
You should score 40 questions correct out of 50 to clear the written test.

Sources: The best way is to go through the official DMV manual. Couple of days preparation definitely required to clear the test and to go through each and every line of DMV manual.

Refer the manual Here

Online Mock Tests

Prepare well on the questions like DUI fines, points for the moving mistakes, limitations of learner driving holders.

You can expect 5-10 questions from each chapter of the DMV manual. So it is worth reading the manual to clear the test.

Step-5: Vision test is very simple. They will conduct it just before your written test.

Step-6:After you clear the vision and written tests, You can visit to the counter with all supported documents and they will grant you the license on the spot. Remember If you have Indian driver license then road test may not be required.

On Saturday, you can expect 400-500 visiting DMV offices. My suggestion is be there 2 hrs before the start time of DMV office to avoid visiting the office again & again.

My Experience:
Day-1: With documents stand in the line, 1st level of verification of documents completed and a token is given to me.
Stand in another line to get written exam permit document. Fee $10, You can pay cash or card.
After you have the document, Come out and stand in another line who will be waiting for giving their written tests.
A new serial number will be given to you, to write the written exam.
At the written test counter, show your all documents, they will conduct vision test and then they will allocate a computer to give the online written test.

Remember, you can skip the questions if you are not sure about the answer and you can attempt to answer it at later point of time.

My suggestion don't wear the headset which they provide at the time of written test, that might be confusing you while answering the questions.

If you fail the test, you can give the test again after a week.
If pass, they will sign the written test document and you have to go the main counter again.

Day-2: With all documents, visit the main/first counter, they do verification one more time and provide you serial number.

Visit the counter once your serial number called.
Show all the documents, they will do verification and pay $12 towards your license fee.
They will take a photo of you and print your license and give it you on the spot.

Congratulations :)  You got your license :) :) :) Happy & Safe Driving :) :) :) :) :)
